The Gender Card?

Saturday Night Live’s skit featuring Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton said it perfectly:
Palin: “We are here today to address the now very ugly role that sexism is playing in the campaign.”
Clinton: “An issue which I am frankly surprised to hear people suddenly care about.”
Now that there is another woman in the running for an office, the gender card has come into question once again. This time, however, the “sexist” attacks are guarded fiercely. Here are just a few of the discrepancies regarding the issue.
First we have the comments made about Senator Clinton…
Roland S. Martin: “Sen. Clinton, you want to be president. If you win, you will be the first woman to be president, and that will be wonderful and historic. But tell your surrogates to cut the race and gender crap. None of the men running has shown he is sexist. And none is racist. You want the job; earn it. Go through the fire like the men. But don't try to play the victim; it's unbecoming of a commander in chief.”
Sarah Palin: “When I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any part kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or maybe a sharper microscope put on her I think, man, that doesn’t do us any good. Work harder, prove yourself to an even greater degree that you’re capable that you’re going to be the best candidate.”
Dick Morris: “When a woman wants to be president she shouldn’t complain based on gender. Whenever she gets under fire, she retreats under her apron strings.”
Nancy Pfotenhauer: “The people who think they’re helping her by playing this gender card are hurting her. It would be a terrible mistake for her to play this victim card because it is just not what we want in a president.”
And here is what is said about Governor Palin…
Dick Morris: “A man would never have had to go through this. It’s the deep sexism that runs through our society.”
Nancy Pfotenhauer: “I think the nature of these attacks… because they are so disrespectful of her as a woman. I also would’ve hoped that they would’ve learned by now not to be so quick to belittle the accomplishments of women. There were questions about she has young children that came out and it was from… a female’s perspective I found that to be one of the most outrageous double standard I have ever seen.”
Now it’s up to you. As far as gender goes, has Palin been treated the same way as Clinton? Or are we letting her off the hook?
