U.S. citizens expected Ulysses S. Grant, who won the Civil War for the North, to effectively run the country because he had talent with leading troops. Unfortunately, he did not have the finesse for managing the country during the reconstruction.
Theodore Roosevelt led the country during the progressive era of the early 1900s.
Senator John McCain, like former President (and Republican) Teddy Roosevelt(1901-1909), has gained notoriety through his military record. Roosevelt was also a strong conservationist. McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, is just the opposite. Theodore's motto while in office was "speak softly and carry a large stick." Some people call it the Bush doctrine to "speak incoherently and hit someone with a stick." Is McCain really "McSame"? If he wins this election, is he going to carry a big stick? Will he be a revered President with a military background? Or will the election and campaigning processes strip him of the character he developed in Vietnam?
