Is Palin Pulling an Agnew?

I don’t know about anyone else, but since August 29th I’ve been on a quest to understand all the reasons why John McCain’s campaign needed Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. I’ve asked myself a series of questions. First, could it really be an attempt to capture the wandering Hillary supporters? No, too obvious. Even McCain could see the flaw in that kind of thinking. Second, is it her vast foreign policy experience? I’ve been told that geographic location in and of itself is a valid claim on someone's foreign policy qualifications. I also wondered: could it have been an opportunity to take the overused inexperience argument off the table once and for all? I figure, even old men get tired of repetition. But that couldn’t be it, Palin made sure to attack the "democratic presidential nominee" for his lack of experience in her speech on Wednesday night. Oh well, I give up, but here is one more interesting take that I didn’t think of: Spiro T. Palin. John Nichols, political writer for The Nation, takes an interesting look at the similarities between McCain’s VP pick, Sarah Palin, and Nixon’s VP pick in 1968, Spiro Agnew. Has Palin been chosen for one specific role—to attack?
