Earlier in the campaign season, as far back as the primaries, many of the candidates have been compared to Reagan. Adam Nagourney of The New York Times sees this same similarity once again. Obama’s run has been a tryout to introduce himself to the American people as the new face of politics like Reagan did in his only debate. This comparison is satisfactory, but it doesn’t quite fit. Reagan was a governor for a long time before he failed in his 1976 run for the Republican nomination. Beyond this Reagan had been in many films before he entered the political sphere. Reagan was a relatively new face when he entered politics but not as new as Obama or Palin. It seems Palin could be the new Reagan with her background of newness, or McCain with his failed run, or Obama with his newness. David Brooks, also in The New York Times, sees Obama as similar to Reagan or F.D.R. in character with “an unshakable certainty.” While the comparison may not be the most fitting, the idea of a President with unshakable certainty (and intelligence since certainty by itself apparently does not work) seems like a step in the right direction.
