Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury" cartoon is predicting a victory for Barack Obama. The strip he wrote for Wednesday cartoon features military characters huddled around a television in Iraq that proclaims "And it's official -- Barack Obama has won. . . ."
Trudeau’s political forecast leaves newspaper editors nationwide with a tough decision about whether to publish the comic strip regardless of the results of the election. Trudeau submitted a weeks worth of comics based on Obama’s victory, along with suggested re-runs for editors to choose from if they choose not to take the risk. Although an erroneous comic is less embarrassing than the false headline the Chicago Tribune famously published after what turned out to be a surprising victory for Truman, editors are seriously considering not running the predictive strip until an Obama victory is confirmed. Others are just curious of what the decidedly liberal Trudeau would do if his prophecy were unfulfilled and McCain pulls an upset (an event Trudeau claims has a less than 4% likelihood). Trudeau himself is not worried about the validity of his comic. If Obama loses, he says, “I'd be a lot more worried about the country than the strip.”
