A popular subject in the Civil War forums of H-net.org this last December was northerners fighting for the south. Along the border states there were populations and entire communities on both sides of the border who sympathized with their neighbors. This was particularly true in taller states such as Illinois, where individuals living closer the the Ohio River had more cultural similarities to those in Kentucky than those in Chicago. Discussions about how the ancestors of these individuals migrated to the old north-west territory by their own free-will, or how small farmers and manual laborers were forced out by in influx of slave-labor, can be seen in detail at H-net by following these links.
