Article V of the United States Constitution states, "The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments," giving the power to amend the Constitution to the State Legislatures as well as Congress. I was able to find, online, over 600 applications for an article V convention, and yet, in the history of this nation, there has not been a single article V convention held. Why have these conventions not been held? Because it seems that we as a nation no longer care about the Constitution. Every year we pass more laws that are clearly unconstitutional which no body challenges. The Constitution grants the power of its amendment to the State Legislatures and yet that power has been denied. Clearly the two thirds requirement has been met; multiple times. I think it is time we stop sitting back and watching while our Constitutional rights are taken away, and an article V convention could help us protect those rights, but only if we protect that right first. If we want to remain the great nation we have been recognized by the world to be, than we cannot allow the foundation of our government to be ignored. We need to demand that the applications be acknowledged, not because we think the proposed amendments are right, but because it is our right to have it.
