Another Eagleton?


The historian Garry Wills (see his editorial at the link above) reminds us of George McGovern's disastrous pick of Sen. Thomas Eagleton in 1972 and wonders whether Sarah Palin will follow this pattern. But I don't think the comparison is very apt - as Wills points out, Eagleton's "problems" were personal, psychological, and responded effectively to medical treatment and he went on to a distinguished career. Palin's "problems" (not her daughter, but rather questions about her ethics, lobbying history, lack of experience and coziness with Big Oil) relate to her politics and mode of governing. Will she survive as McCain's pick? Will she help, hurt, or not make much difference?
