The gas crisis of the 1973 can be related to this past summer's gas crisis in many different ways. First of all, they both happened because OPEC cut down on the production of gas. Secondly, they changed the way Americans went about their day to day lives. They both hurt the American economy immensely.
For example, instead of paying for overpriced gas, we find alternative transportation. The crisis of 1973, was more extreme than the crisis we experienced this past summer, but many of the problems that were experienced then were avoided due to the lessons that we learned during the first crisis. Our economy was hurt by the recent gas crisis because it closed down many factories and drove the cost of living up for the average American.
When OPEC decides to slow the production of oil, the entire world is affected, especially in our high consumption society.
