We can see that birth control and its place in women’s health has been an ongoing struggle that the government does not know what to do with. Obama’s government is not looking for a change in the status, just a slowdown of the argument he is faced with. “We’re not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions.”
Only two years ago women had to fight for the rights of their prescription birth control to stay within their health coverage. The argument that their employers used is that they are not providing any contraception used by men so their coverage is no less favorable to the men.
America has struggled with this issue and its the safety of the men that first allowed birth control in America. In 1914 Margret Sanger was openly advertising birth-control devices in The Woman Rebel and two years later opened a clinic where she gave our birth-control to poor Jewish and Italian women. For these actions she was thrown in jail. Only a few years later while in WW1 the government wanted to stamp out prostitution and protect soldiers form venereal disease they started passing out birth-control devices and information.
In the 60’s second wave of Feminism birth-control was finally easily available to the public. Margaret Sanger’s American Birth Control League, later Planned Parenthood, was distributing the first form of hormonal birth control and oral contraceptive pill approved by the FDA.
