Houston's New Mayor

Many homosexuals keep their sexual preference to themselves because they are scared that other people would judge them negatively. In the other hand, some homosexuals created a gay rights organization called the Mattachine Society, which sought to demonstrate to the public that homosexuals are average Americans who deserved respect and equality despite their gender preference. However, to the eyes of society, homosexuals were considered a weak part that needed to be fixed. Many police raids took place in major cities across the US, for example in 1969, the city police harassed a group of homosexuals at the Stonewall Bar in New York’s Greenwhich Village, which was a gathering place for homosexuals. Many homosexuals took action and fought back, when the word got out of this event, many homosexuals came out of the closet to show power and unity and led to the creation of the “gay pride” parades. Many homosexuals today are not afraid to express their gender preference, like the newly appointed mayor of Houston who is a lesbian wasn’t afraid to run for the position just because she was a lesbian. As a result she won the popular vote and the seat of the mayor.
