French World War II Survivors

For this week's assignment I listened to several recordings of the ordeals of a French family during the Nazi occupation of France.  The recordings are partially in French and partially in English.  The interview is conducted by Dr David P. Boder, from the University of Chicago' Illinois Institute of Technology.  The interview follows the story of how the Jewish Kahn family, consisting of 15 year old  Jean, 51 year old Admiral Louis, and 50 year old Anne Marcelle, escaped France across into Spain, then from Spain moved to north Africa, while 31 year old Charles Jean, who was in the French army at the outbreak of the war, escaped from a German prison camp only to return to Vichy-controlled Marseilles.  Upon returning to Marseille, while the rest of the family had escaped and were attempting to restart their normal lives in northern Africa, Charles Jean joined the French-resistance and remained part of the resistance until the end of the war.  There is also an interview with the father of  Mrs Kahn (Anne Marcelle), Abraham Schrameck.  Mr Schrameck was forced to stay in the so-called "free-zone" that was controlled by the Vichy government, as Mr Schrameck had been a government official, a member of the senate and head of the national police, before the outbreak of the war.  For more details the interviews, which were recorded in 1946, can be found at http://voices.iit.edu/search_results.php?filter_by=nationality&filter_value=fr
